My life has always been a beautiful intersection of two core pillars, namely my faith in God and my love for music. For over thirty years, I have walked with the Lord, and for just as long, I have sat at the piano, picked up my flute, and arranged orchestral strings. Over the decades, I have come to realize that music is not just a form of entertainment or an aesthetic preference. It is a profound, divinely given language designed to deepen our daily spiritual worship. When words alone fail to capture the majesty of the Creator, music steps into the gap, aligning our hearts with the rhythm of heaven and allowing us to connect with the Almighty on a much deeper, more intimate level.
Think about how an orchestral arrangement works in a practical sense. As an orchestrator, my job is to take individual instruments, each with its own unique tone, pitch, and texture, and bring them into perfect alignment. When a single flute plays a melody, it is undeniably beautiful. But when you wrap that melody in the rich, sweeping warmth of orchestral strings, the piece transforms into something that stirs the very depths of the soul. Worship operates the exact same way. Music has a unique ability to strip away the distractions of the modern world, quiet our racing minds, and bring our chaotic thoughts into complete harmony with God’s presence.
In my own life, whether I am composing a piece of music or spending time in quiet reflection, I view melodies as a vehicle for prayer. Scripture itself is woven with music because the Psalms are, after all, a sacred songbook designed to be sung. Music bypasses our logical defenses and speaks directly to our emotions, allowing us to feel the weight of God’s grace and the comfort of His peace in a tangible way. By intentionally bringing music into our daily devotions, we create a sacred space where truth isn’t just learned, but it is felt, celebrated, and deeply embedded into our spirits for the journey ahead.
